SmartBiz at a glance

SmartBiz combines a bank-originated SBA 7(a) product with access to a broader lender network. SmartBiz Bank publishes unusually clear rate and fee information for its $50,000 to $350,000 SBA route. The advertised maximum is not a promise of approval. A final offer can be smaller and can use a different payment structure after the provider reviews revenue, credit, industry, state and recent bank activity.

What the financing actually looks like

Provider role

SmartBiz Bank and a broader lender network. The bank originates qualifying SBA 7(a) loans under its own published program.

Pricing

SmartBiz Bank publishes variable SBA pricing tied to prime, plus an SBA guarantee fee, packaging charge and estimated closing costs.

Repayment

Its published working-capital and debt-refinance SBA 7(a) loans use a 10-year term with monthly payments.

Security

SBA and bank rules can require personal guarantees and available collateral. A lack of enough collateral alone does not always end an otherwise sound 7(a) request.

Availability

Federal eligibility and SmartBiz Bank underwriting apply. The bank states that direct and indirect owners must meet stated US citizenship or national requirements.

Application file

SmartBiz Bank publishes a three-year operating minimum for its $50,000 to $350,000 SBA 7(a) route, plus good credit and cash flow.

The bank page gives a real price frame

SmartBiz Bank publishes variable pricing of prime plus 4.75% for $50,000 to $150,000 and prime plus 3% above $150,000 through $350,000. That is much easier to compare than a vague starting rate. Add the guarantee fee, $2,500 packaging charge and closing costs before judging the total.

Ten years changes the monthly burden

A 10-year amortization can make a working-capital payment far smaller than a one-year online loan. It also keeps debt on the balance sheet much longer. The use of funds should have a lasting benefit, or the business may still be paying after the original inventory, campaign or refinancing benefit has faded.

Current SBA ownership rules are strict

SBA rules changed in March 2026. Applicants for 7(a) and 504 loans must now meet tighter citizenship and ownership conditions. SmartBiz Bank also states its own owner requirements. Check every direct and indirect owner before assembling a large file, because a cap-table problem cannot be repaired by stronger revenue.

Who should keep it on the shortlist?

An established business that can wait for SBA underwriting and wants a long monthly schedule.

A new business, an urgent same-week gap or an applicant who cannot meet current SBA ownership rules. That second group should compare a bank, credit union or government-backed route before paying for a shorter online process.

Our view

SmartBiz is one of the better places to study a published small SBA loan, but the bank product and network matches should remain separate in the review. No published threshold can predict an individual approval, and no company maximum should set the size of the request.

How to read the offer

Ask for the cash delivered after withheld fees, total dollars repaid, number of payments and payment frequency. Then read the personal guarantee, UCC filing, collateral, default and early-payment sections. If the offer uses a factor, calculate an estimated annualized cost for comparison without pretending that estimate changes the contract into a loan.

Model the payment against the weakest recent revenue month. Leave payroll, sales tax, suppliers and existing debt in the bank forecast. A fast approval can still be the wrong product when automatic withdrawals create another gap before the financed project returns cash.
